Mystery Blogger Award!

My Monday Good Thing is a self indulgent one today, I’ve been nominated for an award and so I get to talk all about ME.

I was nominated by At Milliways with a pen (I’m guessing that’s a Douglas Adams reference which is always great), so thank you.

My Answers

Three things about me (I’m terrible at these kinds of questions, so I’ve just picked three random things I could think of):

  1. I once got dragged down the street by bus. It was one where you jump in through the open door at the back. I jumped, grabbing onto the pole; I missed my footing but held on and got dragged along the road to the next set of lights. I may have been quite stoned at the time.
  2. I’ve lived in about 30 different places; including a derelict building, a squat and a house I helped build that had no walls.
  3. If I had the money, I’d do degrees in marine biology and electrical engineering.

Milleyway’s questions:

What’s the book you always wanted to read (or should have read) when you were younger but couldn’t because you never found it/it didn’t exist? Like, what would you have felt truly represented you?

I don’t know if this makes me sound like an arrogant arse or not, but I don’t think I’ve ever found a book that represented me. One reason I started writing when I was a kid was that all female characters I encountered were weak and whiny and I wanted big dramatic characters who did stuff. (I could identify with big dramatic male characters who did stuff, but it wasn’t quite the same). Now, female characters are more dramatic, but I haven’t read any that I feel are like me. That doesn’t stop me enjoying reading about them though.

Are you good with directions? (I’m not.)

I think my brain is missing an essential part that enables me to know where I am. I’m mostly in a haze of unawareness. I’m fine with that because I like to wander.

Starbucks, yes or no? Explain why.

Rarely, because I’m super careful with money and Starbucks is expensive.

What are you the most hopeful about for 2017?

I’ve decided this is the year I get over my problems with anxiety and I think I have a workable plan to do this. My job is going well (I actually seem to know what I’m doing) and I kind of look forward to going in. I’m working on a new writing project that I’m excited about. I think I’m getting a novel published.

Weird question: Do you have a favorite airport? (Mine’s SeaTac.)

I quite like being at airports, I think it’s the lack of anything to do. I spent a pleasant few hours at Quito airport in Ecuador some years ago, just walking round listening to music, thinking and eating a burger. Then I spent the next twenty four hours in Hell as I got food poisoning on the plane, followed by getting stuck in a freezing Houston airport because the planes were snowed in. I’m more wary in airports now.

My favourite post of mine is one of the Islands of Xogulano posts: Lichen Fish

My nominees, all of whom have great blogs you should check out:

  1. Bookyglover – thoughts and poetry
  2. The Shameful Narcissist – mostly book and game reviews
  3. Among Other Things, J – thoughts and poetry
  4. Sidra Owens Welcome to the Wicked Orchard – thoughts and stories
  5. WAGblog: Dum Spiro Spero – art and thoughts
  6. Perfect Man Designs – comic art about life
  7. Word Shamble -stories
  8. Calmgrove – literary musings
  9. Flash 365 – flash fiction
  10. Living in God’s Pocket with ABI – thoughts and poetry about life with a brain injury

My questions for you ten:

  1. Where did the idea for your blog title come from? What does it mean?
  2. What are your plans/ambitions for 2017?
  3. If you could download any file of knowledge to your brain (Matrix-style ‘I know kung fu!’) what would you choose?
  4. What do you find difficult that other people find easy?
  5. What modern saying or common language error gets your hackles up?

  1. I don’t really go for blogging awards (they seem to involve a commitment to engage in unsustainable chain letter practices. But your 5 thoughtful questions really tempt me to attempt answers! Thanks for the nomination though, an accolade in itself. 🙂

  2. I think you have a point, and I feel a bit like I’m imposing when I nominate people. At the same time, it might give people a boost/ more views. Plus I like to hear what people have to say, I guess if nothing else it’s a way of connecting bloggers. Anyway, no pressure to join in, but if you want to answer the questions, that would be great.
    🙂

  3. I too have lost my attraction to these awards. Its a shame though because you deserve something for thinking of me. We should plot a way to make these award something far more prestigious than chainmail. Thank you so much for the nomination!

  4. Ah thank you for the nomination! Sorry it took so long for me to reply (and alas, it will take me even longer to post the award. Cursed lack of time!). I really appreciate it.

I feel the same way you do about the book question. It’s one of the reasons I started writing. I wanted to read the story I was writing, and that was my motivation. I fully admit I’m a shameful narcissist so you don’t have to feel bad either 🙂

    1. My pleasure, I know you do a lot of writing (and reading, wow!) so don’t feel any pressure to rush or any obligation to follow all the instructions. I look forward to your answers though 🙂

  5. Hooray for workable plans for getting around anxiety! That’s awesome. ( feel free to give me some tips 😉 )
Ah, airports. Speaking of anxiety….I like being in them when i don’t have to go anywhere! Otherwise, they give me acute anxiety! I had a panic attack last time…i hate it! And then everyone stares at you, which makes it worse. Stupidest thing is, it’s not flying that worries me, it’s missing the flight/ going to the wrong area ( airports can be huge and easy to get lost in..for me, anyway!), the crowds, and finding the correct luggage pick-up ( i try to pick out a passenger and follow them like a total creep). I suck at life, basically. Shame, as i love the idea of travelling. So many beautiful and interesting countries to visit…. However, i’m very grateful to have never had a food poisoning incident like yours! That sounds like the absolute pits :/ Glad to hear that the majority of your airport experiences have been UNlike that one.
I hope you do get to study someday. Who knows- maybe you’ll become a bestselling author? Then you’d certainly have the cash… but probably not the time! Although i have a feeling you’d find a way 😉

    1. I’m really sorry you have trouble with anxiety, it’s a bastard. I’ll let you know how my plan for overcoming it goes, if it works at all, then I’ll share it. So far it’s been ok.
A panic attack in an airport sounds horrific, I almost had one a few years back – and I remember all too well everyone staring while I tried to calm down. Don’t you live in Australia though? It’s a pretty amazing country to play around in – although very far from everywhere else of course.
The studying is a bit of a pipe dream, but it’s good to have those I think, something to hope for.
Speaking of bestsellers, I hope your book is going well. No pressure, but I’m quietly excited about it 🙂

      1. Well i hope the plan does goes well. Sending hopeful vibes your way! It’d be such a load off to combat the awful thing. It really does interfere with everything, doesn’t it…. but fingers crossed and touch wood !
Yep, i’m indeed in Oz. There are definitely some lovely places here. Where i’ve just moved to is GORGEOUS. Up in the mountains…but still only about an hour away from Melbourne ( best, most creative city in Aus). But this country is SO far away from most of the places i’d love to see…..if i ever have the $$$, i’ll find a way around the airport terror, and go see them all!
Definitely good to not let go of those dreams. You just never know.
Aww, thankyou. It’s aimed at the younguns, really ( i’m aiming to be the next Roald Dahl/ JK Rowling. ..Not overly ambitious at ALL!). It’s such a slow process. So much rewriting and fixing and starting whole sections again. But…i’ll get there. Cheers so for the support! I do wonder whether i’m deluding myself sometimes…(dumb old me? Writing? Pfft) so it really helps to hear some encouraging words! Thanks again 🙂 ( and sorry for the overly long comments…i’m signing off now 😉 )
