The dream man gets out

identikit

Word of the day: Bodach – churl; goblin or spectre

Weather: yuk

Mood: well…

Got home from work, muddy and soaked. The lounge door was open and I could see Jinjing and Hamoudi hunched over their laptops. Being nosy, I went to try and see what they were doing and they both turned to look at me with haunted eyes.

‘What are you doing?’ I asked, I could see composite faces on each of the screens, like something off Crime Watch.

‘Working with an online identikit program,’ said Hamoudi.

‘My dream,’ said Jinjing darkly, ‘the face in my dream, we’re trying to create it.’

‘The man who stands and stares through your window?’ I asked. With all the trouble with the landlady, I’d forgotten about that.

‘I think he was sitting opposite me on the tube this morning,’ said Hamoudi. I tried not to look too confused, but I must have, because he went on. ‘I knew what he looked like from Jinjing. And there he was, the dark haunting eyes, the grey hood, the pointy nose.’

‘And he was going to work?’ I asked.

‘He wasn’t going anywhere, nobody else could see him,’ said Hamoudi. He paused dramatically, then said, ‘He was dead.’

‘Ah,’ I said, I’d forgotten about Hamoudi’s dead people also. I look at the faces they’ve created, Hamoudi’s has a scar, Jinjing’s has a brooding brow and pouty lips.

‘See? They look the same! That proves it!’ says Hamoudi. ‘I saw the man from Jinjing’s dream.’

I don’t point out that they’re sitting right next to each other, looking at what the other one is doing, so it’s not surprising they’re a little bit similar. I also don’t point out that Jinjing’s has no scar and Hamoudi’s doesn’t have a brooding brow or pouty lips. I don’t want to spoil the drama. I creep out the room and make the most of the empty kitchen to cook some pasta.

  1. Collective hallu. Anyways we partake in each other s creation and we want so bad to share the same experience. May be it is the same person who knows

    1. Ah food, always the most important detail of any story. I recently discovered pesto (I mean, I’d heard of it before, but never bought it) so that, cheese and mushrooms. with the spiral pasta I can’t remember the name of. Was good, thanks.

  2. Always good to get food facts straight. Red or green pesto?

BTW – I had drawn your meal before I asked and it was almost exactly the same except no mushrooms or pesto and the pasta was some little tree shapes that I had left over from Christmas… oh, and it had tomato sauce (not ketchup!) but no cheese. Apart from that exactly the same. Spooky!

    1. Psychic! Uncanny how you guessed an ingredient! I had no idea whatsoever that RED pesto existed. Are you sure? Or did you see it in a dream maybe? Or had you covered it in ketchup sauce?

  3. Hey up!

Just rolled over to your blog after you left a like on one of mine a while ago!

That guy at the top of the blog looks like ‘Cuthbert Lilly’ from Zzzap, not sure how old you are but if you were a 90s kid you’ll probably know it. Your friends heads have been invaded by an actor from a kids TV show, unfortunately.

Your friends seem as mental as some people I know. “Dreams mean things, I mean… why else would you dream of them if they weren’t real somehow?” It’s the same with random noises “It’s a ghost!!!!” or the cat or dog looking into a corner “It’s a ghost!!”. I won’t even start with the ‘Mediums’ nonsense and explaining cold reading to them.

I’ll stop before I start a rant in your comment section!

Hope the dream man hasn’t got you!

    1. Hi Phil! Nice to hear from you! Cuthbert Lilly is an excellent name, there should be more Cuthberts in the world. I’ve never seen Zzap, but having googled I get your point.

As for ghosts and dreams, I have one foot in each side of the debate. I love to analyse why we believe things, self delusion is pretty fascinating. On the other hand (or foot), I love to play with possibilities and listen to the wild ramblings of the people around me. I don’t exactly believe in ghosts, but it would be ace if they did exist, so I always keep the door to believing open a crack, just in case. And I always give stories a chance to convince me, because, I guess, I love stories. More than reality a lot of the time.

Mediums, however, exploit vulnerable people, and that’s unforgivable, they can sod off.

      1. Hi there Probiotic!

Sorry for the late reply, but just saw this comment and remembered I completely forgot about it. Sorry about that!

I just don’t have the patience for it anymore, from people believing the Earth is still flat to others who believe that Lizards rule the world, even in spite of solid evidence, I find it difficult. I do however understand you analysing why people believe what they do and how it can be fascinating… I’ve done it myself. I think it’s just a personality trait of mine as I’ve aged to not bother with out-right nonsense.

I do agree with keeping an open mind and to not dismiss things straight away, but when someone starts a sentence with “The Royal family are Lizards…” I’m just out.

I also agree, it would be great if ghosts were real, though from my experience I never see or hear anything, yet my sister has seen three (she changed her mind since and thinks it was magnetic fields) as had my Grandmother and her Mother. There was that one time it sounded like someone was inside my flat and said “Van Doonigan”, turned out my new fridge was making all sorts of strange noises (I’d walked around the flat a few times with a hammer thinking someone had broken in before I realised it was the fridge). It still does and frightens family when they visit.

And yes, exploitation of the vulnerable, even in the guise of offering ‘comfort’ to them, is wrong. I put religion in the same bracket as spiritualist mediums because of that.

Aaaaanyway, I have waffled tooo much, so I shall stop! Just wanted to reply to your comment as I found it quite interesting, as are your other blog posts. So much so I’m gonna sub!

      2. Hi Phil, I like the idea of a fridge that talks about Val Doonigan, as if it contains the artificial intelligence of a granny. (is that less annoying than a ghost? The ghost in the machine?)

Waffling is always good, so I’m following you too.
