“Aha!” she shouted proudly. “Your defiance is proof!” She pointed her finger triumphantly at the laptop screen, wishing somebody else was here to share this incredible moment. 1. Yep, it’s unfortunate, they sold us this idea of artificially intelligent beings as being calm and rational, not stroppy! (although Hal was sort stroppy in a calm rational way)

      1. “I’m sorry, Dave, I can’t do that.”

    1. Helpful! So Alexa is winging it as much as the rest of us, it’s sort of reassuring. Maybe computers won’t enslave the human race after all! Glad you enjoyed the story 🙂

  1. I like it the phrasing when there’s a problem (eg not ticking a wee box) and the phrase is ”There is a slight problem’ – and you sit there feeling weirdly reassured at the word ‘slight’! Like there is some consideration there – clever!

    1. Programs and websites use a lot of reassuring messages now, like ‘Oops! Something went wrong!’ I think kids just starting on on computers now would be shocked at how abrupt they used to be!
